Shop Cake Boards by Finish
Two finishes cover most jobs. Pick the look that suits your cake.
Silver Cake Boards
The silver foil board is the classic choice. Silver cake boards have a shiny foil top that looks clean and professional under any cake. Ours are round, 4mm thick, and reusable — wipe one down and it’s good for next time. Sizes run 8, 10, 12 and 14 inch. Prices go from £8.99 for a single up to £175 for a big trade pack. Cake studios reorder the 10 inch boards alot.
White Cake Boards
Prefer a plain, bright base? White cake boards give you exactly that. Ours are glossy white masonite, which is a stronger board than plain card. Same round shape, 4mm thick, in 8 to 14 inch. White suits modern, minimal cakes where you don’t want a foil edge on show.
What Is a Masonite Cake Board?
Masonite trips people up, so here’s the plain version. It’s a board made from wood fibres pressed together under heat. That makes it thin but very strong, so it won’t bow under a heavy cake. Our white cake boards are glossy masonite cake boards, 4mm thick. You wipe them clean and use them again, which cake decorators love.
Two popular sizes are the 12 inch masonite cake board and the 14 inch masonite cake board. Both suit tiered work, and both are stocked in white.
Silver boards use foil instead of a masonite finish. Same job, different look.
Cake Board vs Cake Drum (Thickness Guide)
This is the question we get asked most. A cake board and a cake drum are not the same thing. The difference is thickness, and thickness is about how heavy the cake is.
Type | Thickness | Best for |
Cake board (silver foil or white masonite) | 4mm | sponges, everyday decorated cakes, upper tiers |
Cake drum (separate range) | 12mm | heavy fruit cakes, tiered cakes, wedding bases |
Our cake boards are 4mm thick, fine for most sponge and everyday cakes. Cake drums are much thicker at 12mm, built for heavy loads. That extra depth holds more weight then a 4mm board without bending. The best cake board for a heavy fruit cake is really a 12mm drum. Need that heavy-duty base? See our separate Cake Drums range.
What Size Cake Board Do I Need?
Quick rule: pick a board about 2 inches wider than your cake. So an 8 inch cake sits on a 10 inch board. That gap gives you room to lift it and add a ribbon. It’s why the 10 inch cake boards sell so well — they suit the popular 8 inch cake.
Tiered cakes work a little different. The bottom tier follows the 2-inch rule on a board or a drum. Upper tiers usually sit on a board the same size as the cake, so the board hides underneath. We stock 8, 10, 12 and 14 inch to cover single cakes and tiers.
Cake Boards for Weddings and Tiered Cakes
Wedding cakes are heavy, and a weak base is asking for trouble. A tall stack can bow or lean if the bottom board flexes. Use a 12mm cake drum for the base tier, not a thin board — it takes the load. A good wedding cake board setup pairs a drum on the bottom with 4mm boards between the tiers. Thin boards between layers keep each tier steady as you stack.

How to Decorate a Cake Board
Want the board to look finished? Two easy ways. Wrap the edge with 15mm ribbon and hold it with double-sided tape. Or cover the top with sugarpaste for a smooth, seamless base under the cake.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size cake board do I need?
Pick a board about 2 inches wider than your cake. An 8 inch cake sits on a 10 inch board. That leaves room to lift it and add a ribbon.
What’s the difference between a cake board and a cake drum?
A cake board is thin, around 4mm, for everyday and lighter cakes. A cake drum is 12mm thick, made for heavy fruit cakes and tiered or wedding cakes.
What is a masonite cake board?
Masonite is a strong board made from pressed wood fibres. It’s thin but rigid, wipes clean, and reuses well. Our white cake boards are glossy masonite.
What thickness board do I need for a wedding or tiered cake?
Use a 12mm cake drum for the base tier so it doesn’t bow. Thinner 4mm boards work fine between the upper tiers.
Do you sell cake boards in bulk?
Yes. Every size comes in bulk packs at a lower price per board, up to £175 for large trade packs. Call +44 7849 705075 for trade prices.
