Which Packaging Tape Should You Use? Clear, Brown and Fragile Tape Compared

By the Samz Packaging team, Bradford, UK · Updated November 2026

Quick answer

Which packaging tape to use? For most parcels, use clear or brown packing tape: clear is the everyday choice and brown gives a traditional look that hides the tape. Add fragile tape on top for delicate parcels. Seal the box with the H-seal method, taping the centre seam and both edge seams.

Clear, brown and fragile tape: which is which?

Most UK businesses use one of three tapes, and each does a slightly different job.

TapeBest forWhy choose it
Clear packing tapeGeneral parcel and carton sealingNeat, versatile and lets labels or printing show through.
Brown packing tapeEveryday dispatch and brown cartonsBlends into the box, so parcels look tidy and plain.
Fragile tapeDelicate or breakable parcelsPrinted “Fragile – handle with care” warning that helps handlers take care.

All three are available in our packaging tape collection.

How to choose the right packaging tape

  • Look at the box. Brown cartons look tidiest with brown tape, while clear tape works on any colour.
  • Think about the contents. Heavier parcels need good adhesion and a solid seal, not just a thin strip.
  • Think about handling. If a parcel contains something breakable, add fragile tape as a visible warning.
  • Think about volume. If you pack every day, buy rolls in larger packs to save time and money.

How to seal a box: the H-seal method

The H-seal is the standard way to close a carton, and it uses tape where the box is most likely to open.

Cardboard box sealed with brown packing tape in an H shape with a hand pressing the tape flat
Seal the centre seam and both edge seams for a secure H-seal.
  1. Close the flaps so the edges meet in the middle without overlapping.
  2. Tape the centre seam. Run tape along the join and extend it 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 inches) down each side.
  3. Tape both edge seams. Add a strip across each end where the flaps meet the sides, which makes the shape of an H.
  4. Press firmly. Smooth the tape down with your hand so it grips the board.
  5. Add extra tape for heavy parcels, and tape the bottom the same way if the box will carry a heavy load.

Common taping mistakes

Two cardboard boxes compared, one with a lifting single tape strip and one sealed with a full H-seal
A single thin strip can lift in transit; an H-seal stays shut.
  • Too little tape. A single thin strip down the middle is not a secure seal.
  • Not pressing the tape down. Loose tape can lift off in transit.
  • Taping dusty or damp cartons. Tape needs a clean, dry surface to grip.
  • Overfilling the box. If the flaps are bulging, no tape will hold them for long.

Looking after your tape

Store rolls somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight and heat, which can weaken the adhesive. Keep the end of the roll folded over so it is easy to find, and use a tape dispenser to cut clean lengths and speed up packing.

Which tape for which job?

  • Online seller packing boxes: clear or brown tape, with an H-seal. See our guide to mailing bags vs boxes to choose the right parcel.
  • Warehouse and dispatch: brown or clear tape in bulk packs for carton sealing, and pallet wrap to secure the load afterwards.
  • Home moves and storage: clear tape for general use, fragile tape for breakables.

Packaging tape FAQs

Which packaging tape is best for parcels?

Clear or brown packing tape both work well for parcels. Choose brown for a plain look on brown cartons and clear for versatility, and use fragile tape for delicate items.

How much tape should I use on a box?

Seal the centre seam and both edge seams in an H-seal, running the tape 5 to 7 cm down each side. Heavy parcels need extra tape, including on the bottom.

What is fragile tape for?

Fragile tape carries a printed warning that tells couriers and handlers the parcel contains something breakable. It does not replace good padding, but it does help parcels get handled with care.

Can I use clear tape on a brown box?

Yes. Clear tape grips any carton and is less noticeable on brown board, though brown tape is the neatest match.

How should I store packaging tape?

Keep it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and heat, so the adhesive stays strong until you use it.
